Dr. Steven Bloomberg Begins Tenure as Maricopa Community Colleges’ Sixth Chancellor
Maricopa Community Colleges has officially welcomed Dr. Steven Bloomberg as its sixth Chancellor. Dr. Bloomberg brings more than three decades of academic leadership, having overseen strategic growth, community partnerships, and expanded educational and workforce offerings at previous institutions.
“I look forward to meeting with as many members of the Maricopa community as possible in the coming months and building on the tremendous momentum already underway across this remarkable institution,” said Dr. Bloomberg. “Together, we will continue to create opportunities that transform lives and strengthen our communities.”
EmpowerED Campaign Exceeds Expectations
Thank you for making the EmpowerED for Student Success campaign a success! We have exceeded our $20 million fundraising goal, helping to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity for our students.
Your extraordinary generosity is removing financial barriers, expanding opportunities and creating a lasting impact for students, families and communities throughout Arizona.
Over $23.4 million was raised in support of four key fundraising initiatives:
- Workforce Development: We strengthened career pathways through partnerships with business and industry leaders, aligning education and workforce training with the needs of a rapidly evolving job market. Transformational investments we received from many, including Arnold Ventures, Lowe’s Foundation and the Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation, help make this lasting impact possible.
- Promise and Innovative Programs: Through investments in innovative and specialized programs, Centers and Institutes across the Maricopa Community Colleges District, and transformational support from donors such as the Helios Education and Arizona Community Foundations for the Maricopa Promise Program, more students are gaining access to opportunities that help them build brighter futures.
- Scholarships and Stipends: The campaign helped remove financial barriers, expand scholarship opportunities, and provide essential support, making higher education more accessible and affordable for all.
- Basic Needs: Together, we provided basic needs assistance and emergency financial support to help students overcome unexpected challenges, stay on track, and complete their college journey.
Scholarship Recipient Pursues Veterinary Career
Meet Quinlin, a Mesa Community College (MCC) student and recipient of the Richard P. Stahl Charitable Fund for Veterinary Technology Scholarship.
Currently enrolled in the Veterinary Technology program at MCC, Quinlin works in a veterinary hospital to gain hands-on experience, to achieve his goal of becoming a veterinary technician.
Quinlin’s scholarship allows him to better manage all that is expected of him academically, professionally and personally. He said, “The scholarship is pushing me closer to my goal and reminds me what I’m working towards.”
Generous Support Makes Lasting Difference
Partnerships play a vital role in providing opportunities strategically designed for our students to continue their education and to fill high-demand jobs, helping to strengthen Arizona’s economy. Featured below are some of our most recent collaborations:
The Arizona Republic/AZCentral.com “Season for Sharing” campaign recently awarded the Foundation a $7,500 grant to assist students with basic needs, for this upcoming school-year. They have contributed more than $1.2M supporting a wide range of programs over the course of our long-term relationship.
Embraer, one of the world’s aerospace industry leaders, recently awarded an Embraer Foundation grant of $10,000 to support students enrolled in the Aviation Maintenance Technician Program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
An auto-renewing annual grant from the A-Mark Foundation totaling $11,000 has been awarded to support Scottsdale Community College and Mesa Community College journalism students who are active in their student media outlet.
The Arizona Community Foundation (ACF) awarded a $25,000 grant in support of the Student-Made Art with Phoenix Forge pilot program which will launch a cohort of student-led, arts-based microbusinesses at GateWay Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College. A loyal partner since 1992, the ACF has provided nearly $10M in support to the Maricopa Community Colleges.
A grant of $67,000 was recently awarded by the Wayland Education Foundation to support student scholarships. A valued partner since 1991, the Wayland Education Foundation has provided over $1.5 million in support.
BHHS Legacy Foundation has provided C.A.R.E. funding of $22,500 in support of the Phoenix College Student Success Specialists Program. Funding will support trained peer mentors who provide mentoring, tutoring, and connections to vital resources for Phoenix College students in healthcare pathways.
A CVS Health Foundation Retail Management Concurrent Enrollment Pathway and Scholarship Initiative grant of $15,000 will be awarded annually to fund a four-course concurrent enrollment pathway for high school seniors. Upon completion, students will transition directly into employment with CVS.
Additionally, we’re proud to join the Lowe’s Foundation as a founding member of the Building Futures Skilled Trades Coalition – the nation’s largest trades coalition mobilizing leading educators, businesses, industry vendors, and workforce organizations to expand opportunities through the skilled trades. Together, this national alliance will strengthen every stage of the talent pipeline, from recruitment to career advancement.
