Julie Augustine grew up in Glendale, Arizona, in a tight-knit community. Despite being a straight-A student throughout high school, her transition to college was marked by uncertainty and a lack of guidance.
Without a clear roadmap, Julie took a few basic courses but soon left college to work full-time. She juggled jobs at a craft store and a trucking company, focusing on financial stability over academic pursuits. The challenges of balancing work, family responsibilities, and personal growth eventually sidelined her educational aspirations.
Julie rose through the ranks at a physical therapy company, eventually becoming a manager overseeing 13 offices across Arizona. Julie’s job required extensive travel, and the demands of her job often left her exhausted.
At the same time, Julie navigated a high-risk pregnancy with twins, which required her to put her career on hold. With childcare costs skyrocketing and her family’s stability taking precedence, she became a stay-at-home mom. Julie described these years as rewarding and challenging as she balanced the joys of raising her children with financial and personal fulfillment struggles.
Once her children were all in school, Julie decided it was time to refocus on her own education goals. She began taking classes at Rio Salado College, determined to finish what she had started. Julie faced numerous obstacles, from navigating financial aid appeals to balancing her coursework with her role as a mother of five. Despite these challenges, Julie earned her Associate’s degree in General Business. She credits her success to the support of her family, advisors, and the availability of online resources.
Inspired by Phoenix College’s (PC) new bachelor’s degree programs, Julie decided to continue her education in Information Technology (IT). She was drawn to the field by her experiences working with IT professionals in her previous roles and her fascination with data analysis and problem-solving.
Julie’s decision to pursue IT marked a turning point in her educational journey. Enrolling at PC provided her with a structured plan and resources she hadn’t had before, and advisors played a crucial role in helping her navigate the complexities of higher education.
Julie’s bachelor’s degree courses have challenged her in new ways, particularly as she delves deeper into data analysis and IT systems. She admits that balancing her studies with her responsibilities at home is still a struggle, but she remains committed to her goal.
Julie’s family has been both her motivation and her greatest challenge. Her six-year-old twins, 10-year-old son, and two teenagers have had to adapt to her busy schedule. Julie has instilled in her children the importance of education, often using her journey as an example.
Financial aid and scholarships have been instrumental in helping Julie stay on track. She acknowledges that continuing her education would have been impossible without these resources.
